  • Academy of Ancient Music

The Academy of Ancient Music is an orchestra with a worldwide reputation for excellence in baroque and classical music. It takes inspiration directly from the music’s composers, using historically informed techniques, period-specific instruments and original sources to bring music to life in committed, vibrant performances.

The ensemble was founded by Christopher Hogwood in 1973 and remains at the forefront of the worldwide early music scene more than four decades on; Richard Egarr became its Music Director in 2006.

The Academy of Ancient Music has always been a pioneer. It was established to make the first British recordings of orchestral works using instruments from the baroque and classical periods and has released more than 300 discs, many of which are still considered definitive performances. (Among its countless accolades for recording are Classic BRIT, Gramophone and Edison awards.)  It has now established its own record label, AAM Records, and is proud to be the most listened-to orchestra of its kind online.

This season AAM collaborates with Michael Collins, VOCES8, Lucie Horsch, Nicolas Altstaedt, Tenebrae, the BBC Singers, the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, and the Grange Festival. Programmes include large-scale vocal masterpieces such as Bach’s St Matthew Passion and Handel’s Israel in Egypt, as well as concert performances of operas including Dido and Aeneas and The Marriage of Figaro.

  • Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia

The Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia is one of the oldest musical institutions in the world. Officially founded in 1585, it has evolved over the centuries from an organization of largely “local” musicians to a modern academy and symphonic concert organization of international repute. Uniting an academic body of 100 of the most illustrious exponents of culture and music with a symphonic orchestra and chorus that are among the most internationally renowned, the Accademia carries out professional musical training and conserves an extremely rich historical patrimony, thus reflecting its own multi-century history.

Sir Antonio Pappano has been Music Director of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia since October 2005; he had already become Music Director of London’s Covent Garden in September 2002.

October 2017 saw Askonas Holt’s first tour with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, in which the orchestra performed across the US with Sir Antonio Pappano, Martha Argerich and Beatrice Rana, in Boston, Rochester NY and Washington DC.

  • Al amor: entre el cielo y el infierno | Magdalena Kožená

Askonas Holt is thrilled to present a new collaborative performance piece from Magdalena Kožená – Amor: entre el cielo y el infierno.

Inspired by her studies of the flamenco style and culture whilst preparing for the role of Carmen, in this project Magdalena entwines the roots of raw flamenco with the music of the Spanish Baroque era. She is joined by two ensembles: Private Musicke will perform the ‘heavenly’ sounds of serene Spanish Baroque, which lends itself to the roots of the flamenco tradition in its story-telling nature and echoes of the flamenco dance forms; in contrast the frenzied fire of acclaimed dancer, Antonio El Pipa, Compañía de Flamenco will ignite the stage with the passion of flamenco dance and song.

In Autumn 2017, Magdalena and the ensembles embarked on a three-week tour of Europe, including concerts at the prestigious Elbphilharmonie Hamburg as well as at the heart of flamenco itself, in Madrid and Barcelona.
