Stephen Costello makes house and role debut in Barcelona

American tenor Stephen Costello makes his house and role debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona as Fernand in Donizetti’s La favorite. Last performed at the Liceu in 2002, this new production is directed by Derek Gimpel and conducted by Patrick Summers.

Stephen has had an extraordinary season, making his Opéra de Paris debut singing Camille The Merry Widow, as well as a house debut at Semperoper Dresden as Rodolfo. He also sang Rodolfo for Teatro Real Madrid; Duke Rigoletto for Canadian Opera, Semperoper Dresden and the Deutsche Oper and the title role Faust with the Moscow State Philharmonic Orchestra.

Stephen’s success has not gone unnoticed; his performance as the Duke at Canadian Opera prompted one reviewer to say “Costello is a fabulous singer. I would classify him as the best American operatic tenor the world has right now. He produces the kind of ringing, opera house-filling notes that give opera lovers goose bumps.”

With no sign of slowing down, the 2018/19 season opens with another exciting role debut as Don José Carmen at Dallas Opera, as well as return appearances at, amongst others, Semperoper Dresden, Hamburgische Staatsoper and the Metropolitan Opera, New York.

Stephen performs in Barcelona on 10,13,16,19,21 and 24 July. Find out more on the Liceu’s website.
