This week, and for the first time since the end of his tenure as Chief Conductor of the orchestra, Sir Simon Rattle returns to the Berliner Philharmoniker.
Sir Simon will conduct three performances of Peter Sellars’ sensational staging of Bach’s St John Passion at the Philharmonie, which uses intensive imagery to accentuate the meditative as well as the dramatic dimensions of the work. Deutschlandfunk have called the production an “interdenominational religious celebration”, and the Berliner Zeitung experienced a “spiritual rapture that seizes the whole room, a kind of shared experience of awakening arising from the feeling of having all been witnesses to an unprecedented event”.
Following performances in Berlin, Sir Simon will take the staging on tour with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, where Christine Rice will join the cast for performances in London, Luxembourg, Hamburg and Frankfurt.

Since first touring the OAE in the mid-1990s, Askonas Holt (and formerly Harold Holt) has had the privilege of arranging performances in Japan, Korea, Taipei, New Zealand, Kuala Lumpur, Abu Dhabi, the USA, Austria, France and Belgium. April’s tour will mark the third of multiple projects with the OAE in 2019.
