Many congratulations to Samuel Hasselhorn, who has won First Prize in the 2018 Queen Elisabeth Competition. A total of 312 candidates applied, with 55 taking part in the first round, semi finals and finals.
AH Rising Star Samuel impressed the jury singing Mahler’s Wer hat dies Liedlein erdacht? and Wo die schönen Trompeten blasen from Des Knaben Wunderhorn, Mendelssohn’s Es ist genug from Elijah, and Verdi’s Carlos écoute – Ah, je meurs from Don Carlos with the La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra and conductor Alain Altinoglu.
The jury included, among others, Director of the Wiener Staatsoper Dominique Meyer, singers Teresa Berganza, Martina Arroyo, Christoph Prégardien, José Van Dam, accompanist Helmut Deutsch, and conductor Christophe Rousset.
Samuel receives a cash prize of €25,000, plus numerous concerts in Belgium and abroad.
This award follows prizes at the 2017 Das Lied International Singing Competition, 2016 Wolf Siong Competition and 2015 Wigmore Hall Song Competition.
