This will be the first time Britten’s lesser-known opera has been performed in Madrid. First seen at the Royal Opera House, London in 1953, it was commissioned by Lord Harewood to mark the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, and unveiled at a gala in Covent Garden which Harewood reportedly lamented as “one of the great disasters of operatic history”.
David McVicar’s new production is a co-production with the English National Opera and the Vlaamse Opera.
Gloriana runs from 12 to 24 April 2018. For more information and tickets, see the Teatro Real Madrid website. The performance on 14 April will be broadcast live on Radio Clásica, and the production will be recorded for broadcast on the Teatro Real’s Palco Digital.
