Release of Julien Libeer and Lorenzo Gatto’s second instalment of Beethoven Violin Sonatas

Julien Libeer and Lorenzo Gatto’s second instalment of Beethoven Violin Sonatas has been released (again on Alpha Classics), featuring No. 1, 10, & 5 ‘Spring’. This follows on from their first release — Beethoven’s Violin Sonatas No. 2, 4, 9 — which Gramophone praised for its “exemplary virtuosity” and won the Diapason d’or de l’année. The third and final album release to complete the cycle is due in Autumn 2019. Julien and Lorenzo first performed the complete cycle on three consecutive evenings at Flagey in Brussels, and have since repeated the cycle elsewhere.

Speaking about the recording cycle, the duo says: “Beethoven’s sonatas have become the core of our musical lives. Rehearsed, tried out in concert, given a rest, rehearsed again […] Anyone who frequents Beethoven for a long time is no longer surprised to be surprised. For him, everything is coherent, but nothing is written in advance.”
