July 2017 brings the long-anticipated inaugural tour of the newly-founded National Youth Orchestra of China (NYO-China) – an exciting new initiative for young Chinese students under the artistic direction of Jindong Cai and beneath the baton of conductor Ludovic Morlot.
The tour begins on 22 July, following a two-week intensive course at a university campus in North America where the 105 young Chinese musicians have been working on an extensive programme of some of the most famous and virtuosic repertoire classical music has to offer.
Inspired by Carnegie Hall’s own National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA), the two-week residency includes a visit to State University of New York, Purchase College, where they will socialise and rehearse with NYO-USA, before attending the American orchestra’s own Carnegie Hall concert on 21 July. NYO-China also looks forward to making recordings for WQXR and NPR’s From the Top; visiting Yale University, where Dean of Music Robert Blocker hosts an event that will be livestreamed to China; and receiving workshops in Alexander Technique and improvisation from American experts.
Following their international debut at Carnegie Hall on 22 July, NYO-China will then fly to China to perform at Beijing Concert Hall (26 July), Shanghai Oriental Art Centre (28 July) and Suzhou Culture and Arts Centre (29 July). The performance at Carnegie Hall will feature soloist Yuja Wang, and the orchestra will be joined by pianist Olga Kern for performances in China. The programme features Dvořák Symphony No. 9, Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 as well as Pulitzer-prize-winning Chinese American composer Zhou Long’s The Rhyme of Taigu.
NYO-USA’s Carnegie Hall performance is followed by their first ever Latin American tour, performing in Guadalajara, México, Quito, Ecuador and Bogotá, Colombia with conductor Marin Alsop.
Both orchestra’s Carnegie Hall performances will be streamed live on medici.tv: NYO-USA on 21 July and NYO-China on 22 July.

In the press
“After a stop-and-go drive from New York City to East Stroudsburg, Pa., some 75 miles northwest, on a sleepy morning last week, I wasn’t necessarily expecting magic. But a small bit happened in a nondescript classroom at East Stroudsburg University, during a sectional rehearsal of the four oboists of the newly formed National Youth Orchestra of China.”
