Staatsoper-regular Jennifer Johnston performs multiple roles throughout the festival: The Mistress of the novices Suor Angelica, La Ciesca Gianni Schicchi, Floßhilde Das Rheingold (20 July) & Götterdämmerung, Second Norn Götterdämmerung, and Roßweiße Die Walküre. We spoke to Jennifer about her relationship with the opera house at the end of last year; read the full interview here.

Joining Jennifer on stage for Il trittico (14 & 16 July) and Wagner’s Ring are Rosa Feola, who performs Lauretta Gianni Schicchi, and alongside Pavol Breslik as the two lovers Il tabarro, and Alexander Tsymbalyuk, who stars as Fasolt in Das Rheingold. The house’s Music Director Kirill Petrenko conducts for both.

Cellist Johannes Moser joins fellow cellist Jakob Spahn and percussionist Carlos Vera Larrucea to perform Mauricio Kagel’s Match!; a tennis match between two string-players with the percussionist as referee (5 & 6 July). Composed in 1964, Gramophone magazine describes the work as “one of the unsung masterpieces of post war avant-garderie.” Watch a preview video of the piece below:

German-Turkmen tenor Dovlet Nurgeldiyev makes his role debut as Medoro in Axel Ranisch’s new production of Orlando Paladino on 23, 25, 27 & 29 July, at the Prinzregententheater. The premiere of Haydn’s comic drama will be broadcast live on BR-KLASSIK. Watch Intendent Nikolaus Bachler and Axel Ranisch talk about the new production in this video.

Angela Gheorghiu leads a stellar cast in Puccini’s Tosca (9 & 13 July). Renowned for her portrayal of the title role, Opera News said of her performance in Benoit Jacquot’s 2000 film: “She is one of the most sensuous Toscas imaginable … Angela Gheorghiu’s passion and beauty are ideal for Tosca, as if the best qualities of Callas’ and Tebaldi’s portrayals had come together.” She has sung the role at houses including Wiener Staatsoper, Metropolitan Opera, Staatsoper Hamburg, and Staatsoper Unter den Linden, and will return to the role again next season, at the Royal Opera House.

Andrei Bondarenko stars as Belcore in L’elisir d’amore (6 July), returning to the role having already performed it in Munich at the end of 2016, plus at Israeli Opera and Opernfestspiele St. Margarethen, where he was hailed “ein exzellenter Belcore” by Kurier.
