Out today, the latest release from Thomas Søndergård and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales features some of Sibelius’ most celebrated works, shining a light on his tone poems and theatre music including Finlandia, Valse Triste and the King Christian II Suite. This is the final in a Sibelius series by Thomas with BBC National Orchestra of Wales, preceded by Sibelius Symphonies Nos. 1 and 6 and Symphonies Nos. 2 and 7.
“This is a full-throated big hall reading of the Suite which is given a most impressive symphonic impulse. These recordings and readings equate integrity with restraint and warrant being played at a higher than usual volume.” MusicWeb International
Thomas and BBCNOW head to the BBC Proms this summer for performances of works by Lili Boulanger, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Welsh composer Morfydd Llwyn Owen, and Mahler’s epic Symphony of a Thousand.
Highlights of Thomas’ 2017/18 season have included visits to Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra and Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. Next season highlights include his debut with Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and inaugural concerts as Music Director of Royal Scottish National Orchestra.
