On Friday 22 June Gergely Madaras will make his debut with the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, stepping in for Zubin Mehta. Drawing on his contemporary music expertise they will perform his compatriot Peter Eötvös’ Speaking Drums with Simone Rubino, followed by Schubert Symphony No. 9 The Great.
Gergely’s significant experience in contemporary music has seen him work with George Benjamin, Thomas Adès and Pierre Boulez, with performances in the last twelve months including premieres with the BBC Symphony at the Barbican, MiTo Festival, a ‘Music of Today’ programme with the Philharmonia at the Royal Festival Hall, and a combined project with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and IRCAM in Paris.
Upcoming highlights include Stockhausen’s Inori with the Orchestra of the Lucerne Festival Academy at the Philharmonie Paris, and the opening concert of the Milano Musica Festival at Teatro alla Scala, conducting works by György Kurtág trans. Cuendet Zweigespräch, Dialogo per sintetizzatore e orchestra, Dusapin Watt for trombone and orchestra, and Stravinsky Petrushka (1947 version).
