This week, George Benjamin will conduct the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain for the first time, on a three-concert tour across England. The tour begins tonight at Snape Maltings Concert Hall, moves to Birmingham Symphony Hall on 3 August and culminates at the Royal Albert Hall with the BBC Proms on 4 August.
The concert programme includes Benjamin’s Dance Figures, Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand with Tamara Stefanovich, and Debussy’s La Mer. Speaking about the tour, George said: “Having been a tremendous fan of the NYO since my teenage years, I am greatly looking forward to working with this extraordinary group of young performers, with their special quality of enthusiasm and joy in music-making. It will also be a very special privilege to perform Debussy’s La Mer – one of his greatest masterpieces – with NYO at the Proms, as part of the commemorations for the 100th anniversary of the composer’s death.”
The BBC Prom will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and televised on BBC Four on Sunday 12 August. Tickets and more information about all three concerts can be found at the links below:
