Askonas Holt singers release oratorio CDs
Congratulations to Rosemary Joshua, Sarah Connolly, Robert Murray and Simon Keenlyside who all appear on Mendelssohn’s Elijah, recently released on the Gabrieli Consort&Players’ CD under Paul McCreesh for their own label, Wingèd Lion. The critics have been unanimous in their praise, with Geoffrey Norris of The Telegraph saying “In defining the lyrical strands that run through Elijah he is fortunate in having soloists of the calibre of Simon Keenlyside to sing Lord God of Abraham, tenor Robert Murray in If with all your hearts, Rosemary Joshua in Hear ye, Israel and Sarah Connolly in Oh rest in the Lord. “.
Sarah Connolly and Robert Murray, this time joined by Joelle Harvey, have also received acclaim for their respective portrayals of David, Jonathan and Michal in Handel’s Saul, with The Sixteen and Harry Christophers for their own Coro label. Gramophone magazine praises Connolly’s “…shapely phrasing, melodic sweetness and eloquent command of language”, deems Murray’s soliloquy “sung thoughtfully” and credits Harvey with a “lovely performance”, such wonderful performances resulting in the recording being awarded Gramophone’s Recording of the month.
This embarras de richesses will be further augmented by the appearance of Rosemary Joshua, Sarah Connolly and Iestyn Davies on the forthcoming recording of Handel’s Belshazzar with Les arts florissants under Bill Christie.
Bravi to all involved!
