This week, Daniel Harding leads an all-star cast of Askonas Holt singers in Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande at the Wiener Staatsoper. Simon Keenlyside revives his critically acclaimed portrayal of Golaud which he debuted in the house earlier this year and Peter Rose as Arkel, a role he first performed to great critical acclaim earlier this year with the Cleveland Orchestra under Franz Welser-Möst. Christiane Karg also makes her house debut in this production singing Mélisande.
Simon’s other appearances in Vienna this season include Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro at the Wiener Staatsoper, a recital with Malcolm Martineau in the Musikverein and a concert with his jazz ensemble in the Konzerthaus.
Peter’s season sees him reprise his unrivalled interpretation of Baron Ochs auf Lerchenau in Der Rosenkavalier at the Wiener Staatsoper and Bayerische Staatsoper, make his role debut as Goryanchikov in From the House of Dead at the Bayerische Staatsoper and return to the Bayreuth Festival as Daland in Der fliegende Holländer.
Christiane will make a second house debut this season at the Metropolitan Opera as Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro. She also makes returns to Teatro alla Scala for Eurydice and the Bayerische Staatsoper for Calisto.
Returning to the orchestra after a hugely successful summer tour culminating with a performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 at the BBC Proms, Daniel is thrilled to be back with the Wiener Philharmoniker. Other guest conducting appearances this season includes concerts with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Berliner Philharmoniker, the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and a return to the Teatro alla Scala for Fierrabras.
Pelléas et Mélisande runs from 12 to 21 October 2017 and the performance on 21 October will be live streamed online. More information can be found on here. Toi toi toi tutti!
