The Venezuelan conductor is to take up the full position in 2013
Many congratulations to Christian Vásquez, who has been named the next Chief Conductor of the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, succeeding Steven Sloane. Christian becomes Chief Conductor Designate with immediate effect, taking up the full position in 2013.
Christian’s first project with the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra in March 2010 was one of his early engagements in Europe. Since then, he has enjoyed a close association with the orchestra and now considers Stavanger his second home. He is full of praise for the orchestra and looks forward to building a stronger bond with them: ‘The Stavanger Symphony Orchestra is exceptional because it displays such passion, sensitivity and sheer love of music. The players are amazingly dedicated and the standard of performance is very high. What is more, they are receptive to new impulses and to the energy I bring to the task. We collaborate well together and, in that process, I learn a lot myself and feel that I too develop together with the orchestra. I would like to share everything I have gained through El Sistema with the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra. I hope to be able to contribute with my own culture and be able to help and inspire children and young people who want to study music.’
The Stavanger Symphony Orchestra’s Artistic Director Arne Almroth shares Christian’s enthusiasm: ‘We are looking forward to having one of the musical world’s most promising young conductors in our midst and to be embarking with him on what will be an exciting artistic journey.’
