In a cast of over 300 musicians, last year Susan Gritton, John Mark Ainsley and Christopher Maltman joined Paul McCreesh and his Gabrieli Consort & Players for a recording of Britten’s War Requiem. One of the iconic masterpieces of the twentieth-century oratorio repertoire, the recording has been critically acclaimed since its release in September and is now nominated for a BBC Music Magazine Award.

The awards jury comments: “The jury marvelled at how well Britten’s own recording of the War Requiem had scrubbed up for Blu-ray Audio in its latest incarnation, leaving little room for a new contender. But then this happened. Intensely focused singing, solo and choral (glinting with young voices), a dramatically persuasive performance, and a gloriously immersive recording. Profoundly moving.”
“It’s a very well-paced performance, and Susan Gritton, John Mark Ainsley and Christopher Maltman are excellent soloists, totally engaged with Britten’s combination of the Latin Mass for the Dead and Wilfred Owen’s war poetry. It’s an outstanding recording for the Winged Lion Label from Signum Classics.”

“… John Mark Ainsley and Christopher Maltman are able to sing with conversational intimacy, while letting through plenty of instrumental detail … Ainsley is almost unbearably tender in ‘Move him into the sun’…” Richard Fairman, The Gramophone, October 2013
