About Toby

Toby Spence has sung at the Royal Opera House, The Metropolitan Opera, Wiener Staatsoper, Opéra national de Paris, Bayerische Staatsoper, English National Opera, Teatro Real, Madrid, the Liceu, Barcelona, San Francisco Opera, Theater an der Wien, and the Hamburgische Staatsoper, as well as at the Salzburg, Aix-en-Provence and Edinburgh festivals.

Recent operatic engagements include his critically acclaimed role debuts as Erik (Der Fliegende Holländer) for Teatro la Fenice, Alonso (The Tempest) for Teatro alla Scala, the title role in Parsifal for Opera North, Alwa (Lulu) for La Monnaie, and Monsieur Taupe (Capriccio) at the Bayerische Staatsoper.

Plans for the 2023/24 season include a return to the Royal Opera House for Erik (Der Fliegende Holländer), as well as house debuts as Alonso (The Tempest) for the Wiener Staatsoper and as the title role in Idomeneo for Opéra National de Lorraine. On the concert platform, Toby sings Mortimer (Lessons in Love and Violence) with Orchestre de Paris and Sir George Benjamin, The Bells with Edward Gardner and the Bergen Philharmonic, Messiah with Christopher Warren-Green and the Minnesota Orchestra, and the Mozart Requiem with Matthew Halls and the Tampere Philharmonic. In recital, Toby returns to the Oxford Lieder Festival.
