Soprano

Sonya Yoncheva

“Yoncheva loves, betrays and seduces, is desperate, is furious in her arias and duets. One can’t get enough of her singing. She inevitably outsings everyone around her.“

    Staatsoper Berlin

“… an admirable performance. Her singing is so enchantingly beautiful and excessively present that all the other characters seem to be pale in comparison… .”
    Julia Spinola, Süddeutsche

“Yoncheva, a stage animal to her last molecule, still manages to bring an extraordinary range of colour and passion to the murderous role of Médée.”
    Shirley Apthorp, Financial Times

“Yoncheva loves, betrays and seduces, is desperate, is furious in her arias and duets. One can’t get enough of her singing. She inevitably outsings everyone around her.“
    Volker Blech, Berliner Morgenpost

“Medea, terrifically performed by Sonya Yoncheva’s dark soprano voice which is over shining everything…”
    Eleonore Büning, Neue Zürcher Zeitung

    13 Aug 18 MONTEVERDI L’incoronazione di Poppea
    Salzburg Festival

“In the title role, Sonya Yoncheva put her luscious, supple soprano at the service of pre-Baroque music; she showed that she is an all-round artist, at home both in the early 1600s as she is in the late 1800s […] Her Poppea was unapologetically sexy; Yoncheva did not shy from sensuous, explicit acting, and seduced the whole audience.”
    Laura Servidei, bachtrack

“Yoncheva brings a plush, seductive soprano and touch of vulgarity that is not inappropriate to the role.”
    Rebecca Schmid, Financial Times

01 Apr 18 VERDI Luisa Miller
    The Metropolitan Opera

“The clear, smoothly slicing quality of her soprano makes special impact in this opera, in which Luisa stands out in a field of dark male voices […] There is always a sense of fatalism, of death calmly awaited, in Ms. Yoncheva’s portrayals.”
Zachary Woolfe, The New York Times

    04 Jan 18 PUCCINI Tosca
    The Metropolitan Opera

“Yoncheva has a glorious instrument. It’s massive, rich in texture, and highly expressive.”
    David Salazar, operawire

“Her rich lyric soprano has grown fuller in recent seasons and her legato is remarkable. Her focused, silvery instrument was glowing throughout its entire range. She approached the famed “Vissi d’arte” reflectively, revealing at every step the character’s anguish.”
    Edward Sava-Segal, bachtrack
