Introduction

Rod Gilfry earned a master’s degree in Vocal Arts at the University of Southern California and also studied with the late Martial Singher. A compelling performer, he was critically acclaimed for Billy Budd on stages throughout the world, performed Stanley Kowalski in the world premiere of André Previn’s A Street Car Named Desire at the San Francisco Opera, and created the role of Nathan in Nicholas Maw’s Sophie’s Choice at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. He is also closely associated with the Metropolitan Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Dallas Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, Opéra de Paris and Opernhaus Zurich, with roles such as Figaro, Marcello, Valentin, Belcore and Count Almaviva. Rod Gilfry will return to the Glyndebourne Festival in the summer of 2017 for Brett Dean’s new opera Hamlet, and to the Metropolitan Opera during the following season for Thomas Ades’ The Exterminating Angel.

“The preening of Rod Gilfry as Maestro Alberto Roc offered tart moments of comedy as the scene spiraled into chaos. As Raúl, Frédéric Antoun brought a warm, beaming tenor that in another opera could serve for a romantic lead.”
New York Classical Review, Eric. C Simpson, 27 October 2017

    “American Premier Has Gleaming Cast.”

    Edinburgh Festival Theatre

“Rod Gilfry’s gritty Don Alphonso was a study in malice, playing edgy power games with the locals as well as setting up Dorabella and Fiordiligi for their fall…The singing was glorious, particularly the ensembles, and I don’t think I have heard the trio “Soave sia il vento” more tenderly done.”
Bachtrack, David Smythe, 26 August 2016

“Performances were strong across the board, however, with Rod Gilfrey taking evident delight as Don Alfonso, mastermind of the whole wicked game”
The Arts Desk, David Kettle, 29 August 2016

“Rod Gilfry was an attractively young-sounding Don Alfonso”
Seen and Heard International, Simon Thompson

“It’s extremely well done… Rod Gilfry oozes seediness as Anna’s besotted if manipulative lawyer, Stern”
Tim Ashley, The Guardian, 12th September 2014

“And the singing and acting of the entire troupe was excellent … Rod Gilfry (new to the
production) convincing as … the increasingly
    scheming and amoral Stern.”
    Stephen Pettitt, Opera, November 2014
