Andrei Ioniță makes his debut with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra this week with two performances of Schumann’s Cello Concerto, conducted by Karl-Heinz Steffens.
Stepping in for Jan Vogler, who has withdrawn due to illness, Andrei’s performances will take place at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall (Edinburgh) and Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall on 9 and 10 February. The concerts come just two weeks after his debut with the Hallé Orchestra, where he gave three performances of the Elgar Cello Concerto under Cristian Măcelaru.
Currently a BBC New Generation Artist, Andrei’s profile in the UK continues to go from strength to strength. He has already performed with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and with BBC Philharmonic – he’ll return to the latter in March to perform the Schumann concerto with Omer Meir Wellber. His Wigmore Hall debut in December 2017 was praised as a performance of “remarkable maturity and individuality” (Classical Source), while future plans include performances at the Cheltenham, and Norfolk and Norwich festivals.
