To celebrate Chinese New Year in style this year, Alison Balsom will make her orchestral debut with the New York Philharmonic with a concerto written especially for her: Qigang Chen’s Joie Éternelle. This virtuosic showcase for the trumpet is surrounded by a whole array of celebratory music, including Li Huanzhi’s Spring Festival Overture and Chinese folk and art songs.
Joining Alison for this Chinese New Year Celebration will be Sumi Jo, performing a festive selection of Chinese folk and art songs including Signore Ascolta from Turandot. This concert will also be Sumi’s debut with the New York Philharmonic.
The evening will be conducted by Askonas Holt’s exciting new signing, the Chinese Maestro: Long Yu. This marks another return to the New York Philharmonic for Long, cementing an important musical relationship with more plans together in the future.
Long Yu and Alison Balsom continue their celebration of Chinese New Year with the Toronto Symphony a few days later on Saturday 4 February 2017, while Sumi Jo travels straight to Kowloon for back-to-back performances with the Hong Kong Philharmonic.
Alison, Sumi and Long’s concert takes place on Tuesday 31 January 7.30pm. For more information, visit the New York Philharmonic website.
