On New Year’s Day at 9pm ‘The Joy of Rachmaninov’, a major documentary on the life, music and enduring popularity of Sergei Rachmaninov, will be broadcast on BBC 4. Presented by Tom Service, the film is a celebration of the composer’s musical triumph through adversity, a study of the emotion and beauty in his key works and the way this continues to inspire and touch the lives of his listeners to this day. This is the first BBC TV documentary devoted to Rachmaninov in almost two decades.
This journey through Rachmaninov’s life and works will feature a performance of Rachmaninov’s ‘Fate’, sung by Alexander Vinogradov and accompanied by Iain Burnside. The performance was filmed while Alexander was in London this autumn, singing Escamillo in ‘Carmen’ at the Royal Opera House.
The documentary can be seen on BBC Four at 9pm GMT on 1 January 2016. It will also be available on demand for a short time after broadcast. Find out more on the BBC website
