Announced today – soprano Aida Garifullina will perform at the opening ceremony of the 2018 FIFA World Cup™ this Thursday.
One of Russia’s most acclaimed sopranos, Aida will join pop star Robbie Williams and Brazil’s two-time FIFA World Cup champion Ronaldo to entertain the stadium crowd and the millions watching around the world during the half hour before kick-off for Russia vs Saudi Arabia in Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium.
“I never imagined I would be part of this huge celebration, the World Cup, happening in my own country,” says Aida. “And, on 15 July, we will find out for whom this precious dream will come true, back on the same stage, after a month-long festival of football in Russia.”
Aida flies in fresh from performances of Gilda Rigoletto at the Wiener Staatsoper. Next month, she’ll return to Paris for the annual Bastille Day Gala Concert, sharing the stage with Orchestre National de France, François-Xavier Roth, Joyce DiDonato, Matthias Goerne, Khatia Buniatishvili and Renaud Capuçon. She is no stranger to the celebrity world, having played a starring role in the film Florence Foster Jenkins, alongside Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant.
