Ainars Rubikis has been named recipient of the 2011 Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award
Many congratulations to Ainars Rubikis who has been named the recipient of the 2011 Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award.
As award winner, he will appear at the Salzburg Festival on Saturday 13 August 2011, conducting a programme including Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No.2 (with Alisa Weilerstein) and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite (1919) with the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester.
Following in the footsteps of last year’s winner, David Afkham, Ainars came through tough competition in a multi-stage process with a jury of nine, including such distinguished musicians as Mitsuko Uchida and Franz Welser-Möst. His talent has been recognised by some of the Europe’s most respected orchestras; highlights of his 2010/11 season included debuts with the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Northern Sinfonia and Bamberg Symphony. Future highlights include Hong Kong and Oslo Philharmonic orchestras. Ainars was also the winner of the Third International Gustav Mahler conducting competition in 2010.
