Triumphant Theodora



Last Sunday concluded The English Concert’s triumphant Theodora tour of the US. The orchestra and Askonas Holt cast including Dorothea Röschmann in the title role, David Daniels as Didymus, Sarah Connolly as Irene, Neal Davies as Valens, conducted by Harry Bicket, received fantastic reviews throughout; finishing with an outstanding performance at New York’s Carnegie Hall, which received a complete standing ovation and critical acclaim. 
Reviewing the performances Voix des Arts commented that Röschmann’s “performance of the title rôle was a monumental achievement.” While the New York Times said she “offered a deeply committed and affecting performance…her lustrous voice intimate and passionate”.

The Los Angeles Times described Sarah Connolly as “an ardently passionate Irene” whilst the New York Times commented that she “sang with power and dignity”.

Neal Davies was “full of verve and character” they also commented that all the soloists “were uniformly outstanding, more musically and emotionally expressive than any comparable cast on record” 

Harry Bicket achieved “transcendent grace” with the soloists and orchestra. Voix des Arts praised “The continuo was superbly realized by Maestro Bicket” …Maestro Bicket consistently adopted tempi that were inherently right for the music and for the singers…he displayed a natural affinity for collaboration with vocalists, and his shaping of scenes disclosed a deep understanding of Händel’s dramatic structures.”
