Every year our Tours & Projects Department
brings some of the world’s leading orchestras to the BBC Proms, including Wiener Philharmoniker, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic and Staatskapelle Berlin…
…and this year is no different! In the space of just seven days, we will bring three orchestras to the Royal Albert Hall for five performances: Berliner Philharmoniker, Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela (SBSOV), and Staatskapelle Dresden.
In what is set to be the busiest weekend of the Proms season, the Berliner Philharmoniker and Sir Simon Rattle perform on Friday 2 and Saturday 3 September, and the SBSOV on Sunday 4 September. Just a few days later, Staatskapelle Dresden will arrive for performances on Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 September.
The Berliner Philharmoniker
were last seen at the Proms in 2014
, performing Rachmaninov, Stravinsky, and a staged version of Bach’s ‘St Matthew Passion’ with soloists including Magdalena Kožená
, Mark Padmore and Christian Gerhaher. Their first performance this year – which will be broadcast live on BBC Four and the orchestra’s Digital Concert Hall
– falls on the day the Proms will commemorate the late Pierre Boulez, the programme including Boulez’s ‘Éclat’, followed by Mahler’s Seventh Symphony. Saturday’s programme features the UK premiere of Julian Anderson’s ‘Incantesimi’ (which the orchestra premiered
in June this year), Dvořák’s ‘Slavonic Dances’ and Brahms’ Second Symphony.
2016 marks the SBSOV
’s third visit to the BBC Proms, the last being in 2011 as part of a European Festival tour
. An audience and critic favourite, their “astonishing
” debut at the festival, back in 2007, was considered by some as possibly the greatest Prom of all time, with The Telegraph
’s Paul Gent saying it “must have been the most joyful Proms performance ever”. This year’s appearance – immediately following sold-out performances of ‘West Side Story
’ at the Salzburg Festival – also marks part of a European tour, with visits to Stockholm, Helsinki, Lisbon, Lucerne and Berlin surrounding their Proms appearance. They perform the UK premiere of Venezuelan composer Paul Desenne’s ‘Hipnosis mariposa’, Villa-Lobos’ orchestral tribute to Bach, ‘Bachianas Brasileiras No. 2’, and Ravel’s ‘Daphnis and Chloe’ and ‘La Valse’, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel.
return to the Proms for the first time since 2009
, with debut appearances for Chief Conductor Christian Thielemann. On 7 September, they are joined by Daniil Trifonov for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21, followed by Bruckner’s Third Symphony. For Thursday’s performance they welcome violinist Nikolaj Znaider for Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D major. Completing the Austro-German programme will be Reger’s ‘Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Mozart’ and Strauss’ ‘Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche’.
Christian Thielemann spoke about his Proms debut in a recent interview
with Anna Picard in The Times.
