Grammy award-winning Korean soprano Sumi Johas opened the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Paralympics today, Friday 9 March. Sumi, the highest selling classical singer in the world, sang the Games’ official song, Here as One. An honorary ambassador for the Winter Paralympics, Sumi has a strong relationship with national sporting events in South Korea, having sung Champions, the title song for the 2002 World Cup which became hugely popular in her home country.
Of her involvement in the Paralympics Sumi said “I hope the world becomes one and healthy people and those with disabilities become one in PyeongChang. Also I hope everyone, young and old, can enjoy and sing along with the song.”
In the UK, the full Winter Paralympics opening Ceremony was broadcast on Channel 4, and will be repeated tonight at 12.30am. More information here.
