La Scala applauds 'Best of Britten'
Bravi to Robin Ticciati, Susan Gritton, Catherine Wyn-Rogers and Ida Falk Winland who made their debuts at the famous Teatro alla Scala in Richard Jones' new production of Peter Grimes. All four artists have just come to the end of a hugely successful run of performances of Britten's masterpiece at the historic theatre, and audiences and critics have been unanimous in their praise. Il Velino reported "Nell’opera Robin Ticciati concerta in modo esemplare. Tiene un ottimo equilibrio tra golfo mistico e palcoscenico. Da tempo non si ascoltavano sonorità di questo livello dall’orchestra della Scala sia negli interludi sia nelle parti strumentali solistiche" and Susan Gritton, singing the role of Ellen Orford, was judged "un soprano drammatico di qualità". Federico Vazzola writing in GB Opera Magazine praised Ida Falk Winland's First Niece, calling her an "eccellenti attrici-cantanti" and Giuseppe Montemagno, writing for France's L'Avent Scene, admired "l’étonnante Mrs. Sedley de Catherine Wyn-Rogers". Hugh Canning, reviewing the production in The Sunday Times thought Gritton's Ellen Orford "radiant" and also praised Ticciati's handling of the score reporting that "the Scala orchestra shone, Ticciati unleashing a torrent of sound in the Storm and a dazzlingly pointillistic evocation of the sunlight catching the glinting waves in the exultant Sunday Morning". The production was broadcast to cinemas worldwide and, for those who missed it, a DVD is in the pipeline.
