A DVD of Fiona Shaw’s production of Britten’s ‘The Rape of Lucretia’ – recorded at the 2015 Glyndebourne Festival, and starring Christine Rice, Kate Royal, Duncan Rock, Louise Alder, Catherine Wyn-Rogers & Matthew Rose – has been released this week.
For the first time since its premiere in 1946, Britten’s early opera ‘The Rape of Lucretia’ returned to the Glyndebourne Festival in 2015. Directed by Fiona Shaw, the stellar cast featured no fewer than six Askonas Holt singers, and was filmed for DVD by Opus Arte.
Shaw’s production was first seen on Glyndebourne’s Tour in 2013, Britten’s centenary year, and won rave reviews
for its “revealing” and “deeply intelligent” insights. On this newly released DVD, Christine Rice
sings the title role opposite Duncan Rock
as Tarquinius. Rock sang the role in Shaw’s original touring production, and also when the production was seen at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. Kate Royal
sings the role of Female Chorus and Catherine Wyn-Rogers
(in her Festival debut) is the sympathetic maid Bianca. Louise Alder
(also making her Festival debut in this production) sings the role of Lucia, and the line-up is completed by Matthew Rose
as Lucretia’s husband Collatinus.
