Myung-Whun Chung conducts Teatro alla Scala’s new production of Der Freischütz. A classic masterpiece of German operatic Romanticism, this opera has not been performed at La Scala since 1998. Chung will conduct an illustrious cast that includes Julia Kleiter as Agathe and Günther Groissböck playing the demonic role of Kaspar, while Micheal König offers his Heldentenor to the character of Max. The new production is directed by Matthias Hartmann, who previously directed the Burgtheater in Vienna.
Later in the season, Chung will conduct Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera at Teatro La Fenice and return for their New Year’s Eve concerts (28, 29, 30, 31 December 2017 and 1 January 2018). As is now tradition, the first part of the concert is purely for orchestra with soloists and choir joining the second half dedicated to melodrama, ending with the chorus Va’ Pensiero from Verdi’s Nabucco and the toast Libiam ne’ lieti calici from La Traviata.
Teatro alla Scala’s Der Freischütz opens on 10 October with subsequent performances on 13, 15, 17, 20, 23, 26, 30 October and 2 November. The performance on 13 October will be broadcast live on RaiRadio 3. More information here.
