Major new recording of Verdi’s ‘Macbeth’



Chandos has released a major new studio recording of Verdi’s Macbeth featuring no less than four Askonas Holt artists. Simon Keenlyside heads the stellar cast as Macbeth and Latonia Moore stars as his murderous wife. Brindley Sherratt sings Banco and Edward Gardner presides over the proceedings conducting his own orchestra from the English National Opera.
Simon Keenlyside’s Macbeth can already be seen on DVD in Phyllida Lloyd’s production from Covent Garden but this major recording in English is nonetheless a significant addition to his sizeable discography. One of his signature roles, he has also sung Verdi’s villainous King at the Deutsche Opera in Berlin and for the Wiener Staatsoper and he will sing the role again this summer at the Bayerische Staatsoper as part of the Munich Festival.
Latonia Moore, one of the most in demand Verdi sopranos of the moment, sings Lady Macbeth for the first time. She has become particularly associated with the title role in Verdi’s Aida which she has sung with great success in theatres the world over including New York’s Metropolitan Opera, Covent Garden, the Opernhaus Zurich, Hamburg State Opera, Tokyo’s New National Theatre, Opera Australia in Sydney and for the San Diego, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Detroit and Dallas Operas. Other Verdi roles include Amelia in Un ballo in maschera and in Simon Boccanegra, both of which she has sung for the Hamburg State Opera, Elvira Ernani which she has performed in Trieste and Lucrezia I due Foscari which she has sung in Bilbao.
Brindley Sherratt has already enjoyed success in the role of Banco on stage for the Opera de Bordeaux and his other Verdi roles have included Ramfis in Aida and Sparafucile in Rigoletto at Covent Garden, Filippo in Don Carlo for Opera North and Fiesco Simon Boccanegra for the English National Opera.
An exclusive recording artist for Chandos, Edward Gardner adds to his collection of critically acclaimed discs of Mendelssohn, Lutoslawski, Britten and Berio with this new recording of Verdi’s Macbeth. Ed started the season at ENO with critically acclaimed productions of Fidelio and Peter Grimes. He is currently in rehearsals for Julian Anderson’s new work Thebans which opens in May and continues his association with Terry Gilliam who directs a new production of Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini June.
