L’incoronazione di Poppea

Monteverdi’s most sensuous – and scandalous- opera is performed in a semi-staging at the Barbican on 4 October by the Academy of Ancient Music and a stellar cast including Sarah Connolly as Nerone, Iestyn Davies as Ottone and Matthew Rose as Seneca.  This will be the first time Connolly has sung  Nerone in London, having enjoyed success in the role in both Barcelona and Florence.  The Barbican audience can also look forward to hearing Iestyn Davies as Ottone, a role he has also sung in the Glyndebourne Festival’s recent staging of the piece. Matthew Rose, meanwhile, makes a much anticipated debut as the sonorous philosopher Seneca.
