Lars Vogt and Christopher Maltman star in the first night of the Proms

Lars Vogt and Christopher Maltman will star in the first night of this year’s BBC Proms festival at the Royal Albert Hall this Friday 17 July 2015. Lars Vogt will perform Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Sakari Oramo – a fascinating concerto which Lars describes as ‘melancholy and being the memory of childhood, rather than the image childhood itself.’ In his usual inimitable style Lars says that Mozart is a composer who can  “…use very few notes, but say everything…!”
From September Lars will take up his post as Music Director of the Royal Northern Sinfonia with their season opening concert on 18 September.
Joining for the second half of the programme, Christopher Maltman will feature as the soloist in Walton’s monumental Belshazzar’s Feast; scored for two mixed choirs, two brass bands and full symphony orchestra!
Christopher’s busy summer continues at the Verbier Festival next week, where he will perform the St Matthew Passion under the baton of Thomas Quasthoff; he then heads to the Salzburg Festival for performances of Iphigénie en Tauride
For the first time at the Proms, a series of Sunday matinees is being introduced aimed at families. They include concerts celebrating the first year of ‘Ten Pieces’, the BBC’s classical music initiative for primary schools, with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Music Director Thomas Søndergård.
