Pianist Inon Barnatan has been announced as the next Music Director of La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest – the internationally acclaimed celebration of chamber music based in San Diego
The appointment – effective from summer 2019 – will see Inon create programs for the festival, including artists, repertoire, programmatic themes, lecturers, composers, commissions and educational initiatives. It follows his three-season term as the New York Philharmonic’s inaugural artist-in-association, where he was similarly engaged across a broad spectrum of performance and outreach activities.
Commenting on the appointment, Inon said: “On first performing at SummerFest in 2012, it instantly became one of my favourite festivals in the world. I am especially excited to be starting this journey and exploration of ideas in a new world-class home for this family: The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center. I can’t wait to see what we all can do there together.”
Regularly performing with the Chicago Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic and Minnesota Orchestra, Inon recently made his Proms debut with the London Philharmonic and the BBC Symphony. Forthcoming engagements includes debuts with the Helsinki Philharmonic and NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, and a return to the Wigmore Hall and BBC Proms.
