Sumo Association of Japan

Sumo is recognized worldwide as one of the great icons of Japanese culture. Its origins lie in rural rituals that can be traced back over 2000 years. According to legend the very origin of the Japanese race depended on the outcome of a Sumo match. Today the sport of the gods offers a deep insight into Japanese culture, and is still surrounded by ritual and ceremony.

Askonas Holt are proud to have been involved in the organisation of the first ever Sumo tournament held outside of Japan. The highlight of the Japan Festival 1991, a full complement of wrestlers came to the Royal Albert Hall for a five-day event in October 1991.
