Fiona Murphy
Irish mezzo-soprano, Fiona Murphy, is a graduate of University College Dublin, the Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia, and a recent member of Houston Grand Opera’s Studio programme. She has performed with Houston Grand Opera, English National Opera, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Chicago Opera Theater, Opera Ireland, Wexford festival Opera, Opera Theatre Company, Co Opera Ireland, Lyric Opera Productions and Wolf Trap Opera Company. Fiona’s roles include Cherubino (Houston Grand Opera, Wexford Festival), Hansel (HGO, RTE Symphony Orchestra), Zerlina (HGO), Stephano (WTOC), Carmen (English National Opera, Lyric Opera Productions), Mercedes (HGO, ENO), Fox Golden Stripe- Cunning Little Vixen (HGO), The Fox – The Little Prince (HGO), Minerva- Il Ritorno d’Ulisse (Chicago Opera Theater), Lucretia- Britten (Curtis Opera Theater). For Houston Grand Opera, Fiona has also covered the roles of Poppea, Carmen and Idamante. Concert Repertoire includes Mozart Requiem, Beethoven Mass in C, Rossini Stabat Mater, and Rossini Petite Messa Solonelle. She has performed in concert with the Austin Symphony Orchestra, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Curtis Symphony Orchestra, and National Symphony of Ireland. Fiona was a finalist in the 2005 Hans Gabor Belvedere Competition, and the 2005 Operalia Competition, Madrid. She was the National Council Metropolitan Opera Mid Atlantic Region winner in 2004. Fiona recently received critical acclaim for her performances of Carmen at English National Opera, stepping in last minute for Alice Coote in the title role. Future engagements include “Valencienne” in ENO’s upcoming production of Merry Widow alongside Alfie Boe.
