Amjad Ali Khan

Newcomers routinely become instant converts to North Indian classical music within hearing a few notes played by Sarod Maestro Amjad Ali Khan. Credited for establishing the sarod as one of the most popular instruments in North Indian music, Amjad Ali Khan can trace his direct musical ancestry over six generations of the legendary Bangash family and back further to Mian Tansen, musician at Emperor Akbar's court. Amjad Ali Khan recently celebrated his fiftieth year as a performer (he started at the age of just eight), and has been heard far beyond India in concerts at New York's Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., London's Royal Festival Hall, the Theatre de la Ville in Paris and Tokyo's Suntory Hall.
