Alisa Weilerstein wins 2008 Martin E. Segal AwardWe're proud to congratulate the 25-year old cellist Alisa Weilerstein on receiving the 2008 Martin E. Segal Award. Ms. Weilerstein and fellow winner, stage director Thomas Kail, were presented with the awards at a luncheon at Lincoln Center’s Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse on Tuesday, March 18. The winners each received $7,500 to be used for future study and career advancement. Now in its 22nd year, the distinguished Award is given annually to two rising young artists in recognition of outstanding achievement. On a rotating basis since the inception of the prize, two of Lincoln Center’s twelve resident arts constituents have been asked to nominate an artist or ensemble associated with their organization to receive the Martin E. Segal Award. This year’s winners were selected by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Inc., and The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.
Alisa Weilerstein has attracted widespread recognition for playing that combines natural virtuosity and technical assurance with impassioned musicianship. Ms. Weilerstein has performed with the nation's top orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony and the Orchestre National de France. She has given recitals in music capitals throughout the U.S. and Europe, and regularly performs in prestigious international festivals including the Mostly Mozart Festival where she recently participated in the New York premiere of Golijov's cello concerto Azul. The 2008-2009 season will find Ms. Weilerstein performing as part of the subscription concert series at the New York Philharmonic in addition to making her subscription concert debuts with the Cleveland Orchestra, Boston Symphony, Dallas Symphony, New World Symphony, and Chicago Symphony. Alisa Weilerstein won the 2006 Leonard Bernstein Award and was the recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2000.
