Rose in BuddPeter Rose is having a huge success in Santa Fe as the repressed John Claggart in 'Billy Budd'. The reviews have been universal in their praise:
Peter Rose is bone-chilling as the sadistic master-at-arms John Claggart – all the more so, paradoxically, for singing with such focused finesse. Herman Melville, on whose novella the opera is based, imagined Claggart with a bit of an aristocratic bearing; Mr. Rose realizes it vocally. Dallas Morning News
The English bass-baritone Peter Rose brings a formidable voice and blustery energy to Claggart, one of the most elusive characters in opera. What drives Claggart’s malevolence? He seethes with longings he dare not fathom. New York Post
From the very moment of his entrance on stage Peter Rose as the master-at-arms John Claggart becomes the manifestation of evil one loves to hate. With an imposing physical presence and stentorian voice, Rose demonically commands the stage as well as everyone around him, barely containing his disgust for the officers above him. Journal
This summer marks the end of one extraordinary year and the start of another extraordinary year in Peter's career. Last season started with Claggart in Hamburg where he returned during the season for Ochs in 'Der Rosenkavalier' - a role he that is now very much his calling card - and Philip in 'Don Carlos'. The season also saw him at the Munich Bayerische Staatsoper as Daland in 'Der Fliegende Holländer' and at the Berlin Deutsche Staatsoper as Ochs and King Philip. He also found time to sing Basilio in 'Il Barbiere di Siviglia' at the Met in New York and to perform his first Mephistopheles in 'La Damnation de Faust' for the BBC National Ochestra of Wales ('suitably diabolic in tone and deameanour' said the Guardian). After a very brief break the approaching season promises to be just as exciting: a return to Hamburg for Philip in 'Don Carlos'; his first Boris Godonov in a new production at English National Opera; the Pope in 'Palestrina' at the Bayerische Staatsoper; Ochs in Berlin and Graz and the Athlete in Berg's 'Lulu' at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. He will also squeeze in concerts with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Munich Philharmonic.
