Berliner Philharmoniker Debuts

September 2008 sees the first ever performances of the internationally acclaimed Berliner Philharmoniker, led by Artistic Director Sir Simon Rattle, in Liverpool and Dublin.

Sir Simon Rattle returns to his hometown of Liverpool with the Berliner Philharmoniker to perform a sold-out concert on 4 September at the Philharmonic Hall, the venue where he began his stellar music career. The performance is one of the highlights of the Liverpool, European Capital of Culture 2008 programme, and features Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde - Prelude and Liebestod, and Messiaen’s Turangalila’s Symphony. Soloists Pierre Laurent Aimard, renowned for his interpretation of Messiaen’s work, and Tristan Murail will play alongside the orchestra in the later piece, whose performance coincides with the centenary of the composer’s birth.

For its Dublin debut on 6 September, the Berliner Philharmoniker launches the National Concert Hall’s Sunday Business Post International Orchestral Series. Sir Simon Rattle leads the orchestra in a performance of Brahms’ 3rd Symphony, a work central to the ensemble’s repertoire, and Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony.

The UK and Ireland tour will also sees the orchestra's return to the BBC Proms, with concerts on 2 and 3 September at the Royal Albert Hall.
