Gramophone Magazine announces ‘Editor’s Choice’ and ‘DVD of the month’ recordings

We are delighted that three recordings featuring Askonas Holt artists have been highlighted in the February edition of Gramophone Magazine.
John Eliot Gardiner conducts Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, featuring Lucy Crowe, Jennifer Johnston and Matthew Rose.  The performance was recorded live, at the Barbican in October 2012. “…his blistering and yet at times often profoundly moving new account of the work is one which complements the 1991 version rather than supplants it. The newer version demands to be heard. Such is the visceral intensity of the music-making, a certain girding of the loins may be required before a second hearing, but isn’t that precisely how it should be with a work of this power and magnitude?”

Imogen Cooper has collaborated with baritone Wolfgang Holzmair for many years, in both performance and recordings.  Their latest disc of works by Robert Schumann and Aribert Reimann was recorded live in December 2010. “The vocal line and piano achieve a delicate synthesis that Holzmair and Cooper interpret with the utmost subtlety. Two perfectly formed Schumann encores cap a recital that brings together two artists who are in complete harmony with the repertoire and with one another.”

Heggie’s Mobby-Dick is ‘DVD of the Month’, featuring Stephen Costello and Jonathan Lemalu. ‘Moby-Dick emerges as an opera that has everything, and takes its place alongside the esteemed oceanic operas Billy Budd and L’amour de loin.’
