Toi toi toi to Evelina Dobračeva who makes her role debut as Leonore this weekend, in a new production of Beethoven’s Fidelio at Theater St. Gallen, Switzerland directed by Jan Schmidt-Garre. Fidelio, Beethoven’s only opera, tells the story of Leonore, who disguises herself as a prison guard in order to rescue her husband from a political prison. Soprano Evelina performs in the lead role for her first operatic appearance of 2018.
The production marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the “Grosse Haus”, the heart of the Theater St. Gallen located in the museum quarter. The building opened with Beethoven’s Fidelio as its inaugural performance in 1968.
Continuing with a successful year, this season has seen Evelina perform Rubenstein’s Moses in Warsaw, and Rachmaninov’s The Bells in Rome. Evelina received critical acclaim for her performance of Erwartung by Schoenberg earlier this year, and will take on Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 14 in Florence later in the season.
Evelina will give seven performances of Fidelio between 18 March and 16 June. For more information, visit the Theater St. Gallen website.
