Edward Gardner returns to Met Opera with Massenet’s Werther

Fresh from his first UK tour with the Bergen Philharmonic and following his 2013 success with Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier, Edward Gardner will be returning to the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

From 16 February 2017, Edward will be conducting a star-studded cast, including Isabel Leonard as Charlotte alongside Vittorio Grigolo and Jean-François Borras sharing the title role in Richard Eyre’s acclaimed production. Werther, Massenet’s heart-wrenching opera based on Goethe’s seminal novel, is the second production by Richard Eyre Edward will be conducting, following his house debut in 2010 with Bizet’s Carmen, starring Elīna Garanča in the title role.

Whilst in New York, Edward will also be returning to Juilliard on 24 February conducting the Juilliard Orchestra, violinist Brian Hong and soprano Christine Taylor Price in Schönberg’s Violin Concerto and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4.

Performances of Werther will take place at the Metropolitan Opera from 16 February to 9 March 2017.
