Don Carlo a triumph for three Askonas Holt artists in Amsterdam

Maltman, Petrenko, and Nézet-Séguin impress in Verdi’s masterpiece at Netherlands Opera

Bravo to artists Christopher Maltman, Mikhail Petrenko, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin, all currently enjoying a tremendous success in Verdi’s masterpiece Don Carlo at the Netherlands Opera.  In this revival of Willy Decker’s production Christopher Maltman shines in his role debut as Rodrigo, the Marquis of Posa, Mikhail Petrenko is terrific in his first Filippo II, and Nézet-Séguin conducts the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, of which he is Music Director.

The Dutch Opera Magazine featured a rave review for the opening night:

“Nézet-Séguin leads his own outstanding orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic, with unbridled passion and enthusiasm on the one hand, and a sharp, astonishing attention to detail on the other. An extraordinarily rich performance of Verdi’s masterpiece…Mikhail Petrenko gives a convincing portrayal of Filippo II. Christopher Maltman (Rodrigo) is his measure in volume and robustness and has an admirable top register. His death scene is a real highlight.”

Critic Jordi Kooiman ends the piece with a resounding endorsement of the show: “The Netherlands Opera, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the strong cast and above all Yannick Nézet-Séguin have put on a show to rival the best we may see this year”.

The performances continue until 30 May.

Bravi tutti!
