Congratulations to Cédric Tiberghien who has been awarded a Diapason D’or for his latest solo recital recording. The Hyperion disc features the Etudes and Masques of Karol Szymanowski, a composer who, as Cédric told the Boston Globe in a recent interview, is unjustly neglected. Cédric first made his acquaintance with Szymanowski through the Fourth Symphony which features a wonderful piano part. He then followed this with a recording of the works for violin and piano (with Alina Ibragimova, Hyperion) and now has finally arrived at the solo piano repertoire.
The Diapason review is just one of many glowing reviews for Cédric, both for this recording, and also recent recital performances in Boston. One reviewer asks if Cédric will be back in the studio to give us a follow up volume of Szymanowski; in fact, Cédric will be moving onto the solo piano works of Bartók for his next Hyperion projects!
“Few players of this music combine such clarity and articulation with shimmering sparkle and virtuosic flair; this is sophisticated pianism” BBC Music Magazine
“His quite extraordinary tonal palette and acute observation of the composer’s fastidious notation are beyond reproach, a masterclass in refined virtuosity.” Gramophone Magazine
“Au-delà de la virtuosité, les Etudes op 33 s’apparentent bien à des pièces d’atmosphère, à des improvisations fantasques où Tiberghien sait creuser du mystère.” Diapason
“Tiberghien’s technique is formidable, but it’s his intensity and poetic impulsiveness that catch the ear.” Boston Globe
