Antonio Méndez

Introduction

Spanish conductor Antonio Méndez is fast becoming one of the most exciting conductors of his generation.

Season 2015-2016 sees Antonio conduct on tour with the Philharmonie Zuidnederland to The Netherlands and with the Spanish National Orchestra to Japan. He will also make two recordings: with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and with the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart, alongside debuts & concerts with Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Dresden, Auckland Philharmonia and Iceland Symphony Orchestra, amongst others.

He will also return to conduct the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Tonkünstler Orchester.

Despite his youth, Antonio has already had great success conducting orchestras such as Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rudfunks, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Tonkünstler Orchestra (at Grafenegg Festival), Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Spanish National Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg and Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne.

He attracted international attention as a prize winner at the prestigious 2012 Nikolai Malko Competition for Young Conductors in Copenhagen and more recently as a finalist at the 2013 Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award.

Scottish Chamber Orchestra: 21 January 2016

SCO, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen

'Conducting each symphony without a score, Mendez had evidently done his homework, for the twists and turns of this most light-footed of symphonies were beautifully realised...Mendez clearly relished the opportunity to put such a virtuosic orchestra through its paces - the audience loved it too' Christopher Lambton, The Arts Desk
'The instrumental elements of the programme fared better, with a gloriously-characterised account of Haydn’s 99th Symphony in which the SCO’s playing captured exactly the spirit of adventure, imagination, originality and freedom that lace the score, and a hell-for-leather performance of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony in which the SCO, like a pristine period band on something deliciously-toxic, went through the Symphony in turbo-drive, with the man from Bonn bellowing approval from the touch-line about the fleet momentum of the slow movement, with not a breath of ‘drag’ in sight, and the breath-taking, power-driven pace and impact of the finale.' Michael Tumelty, Herald Scotland
'...he had the orchestra sounding like a band floating magically on air...Méndez wrapped such thrills in a blanket of luxuriant tone, even more telling in the melting poeticism of the Adagio' Kenneth Walton, The Scotsman

Bremer Philharmoniker November 2015

Die Glocke, Bremen

Rauschendes Klangfest
'Unter dem umsichtigen Dirigat von Antonio Méndez ließ das Orchester die vielfältigen Facetten in illustrativen, teils geradezu berauschenden Bildern erstrahlen. Großartig, wie sich der melancholische Grundcharakter schon zu Beginn in dunklen Streicher- und Bläserakkorden finden ließ. […] Tosender Beifall'

Weser Kurier, Gerd Kilngeberg
'Es bedeutet Mut, dieses Riesenwerk in ein Konzertprogramm zu setzen und noch mehr Mut, es einem gerade mal dreißigjährigen Dirigenten anzuvertrauen: So gehört beim letzten Konzert der Bremer Philharmoniker unter der Leitung des jungen Spaniers Antonio Méndez, der damit ein bedenkenswertes Debüt in Bremen hinterließ.' Kreiszeitung.de, Ute Schalz-Laurenze

Scottish Chamber Orchestra

St Magnus Festival, Orkney

"This year’s resident band was the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, working for the very first time with the 31-year-old Majorcan-born conductor Antonio Méndez. Their opening programme on Friday showed the young Méndez as a name worth watching...it’s an exciting thought that Méndez will be back with the SCO as part of its main season next January. Worth looking out for." Ken Walton, The Scotsman
"...Scottish Chamber Orchestra, joined for the first time by young Spanish conductor Antonio Méndez. Judging by his vivid, energetic performances, bursting with detail and life yet summoned seemingly with the subtlest flick of a wrist, he’s definitely a name to watch. His Mendelssohn Italian Symphony was bright and eager, with a nice sense of gentle flow in the third-movement minuet, and he pushed the SCO players hard in a frenzied concluding tarantella. His Stravinsky Pulcinella felt elegant, even nonchalant, yet – despite the music’s origins in 18th-century Italian dance music – thoroughly 20th-century in its thick textures and abrupt contrasts of mood."

"Maxwell Davies’s Ebb of Winter made a bracing opener for the SCO’s second concert, again meticulously delivered by Méndez, who charted a sure trajectory from the work’s dark, angular opening through to the acid brightness of its brass-and-glockenspiel conclusion."

"Méndez proved a highly effective storyteller in a very impressive Beethoven Pastoral Symphony after the interval: brisk, beautifully sculpted, and shot through with period rawness."

A Hero's Symphony: 10 January 2015

Regina Symphony Orchestra

"Mendez, muted, spoke with a conducting flair, with movements and a style as graceful as ballet dancer. Though youthful in age, it was apparent within moments the conductor holds a vast experience" Christopher Tessmer, The Leader Post

Mendelssohn

Mahler Chamber Orchestra: 20 September 2014

Musikfest Bremen

Volker Timmermann for NWZ Online
 "Ein absolut herausragendes Debüt" Kreiszeitung

Tonkünstler-Orchester: 12 July 2014

Grafenegg Festival

Reinhard Hübl for Wiener Bezirkszeitung
