Alexander Shelley embarks on second half of cross-Canada tour with NAC Orchestra of Ottawa

The National Arts Centre Orchestra of Ottawa and their Music Director Alexander Shelley will embark on the second half of an extensive cross-Canada tour, dubbed Canada150, to celebrate 150 years since the formation of the Confederation of Canada. The tour continues on after the Ideas of North festival, which also celebrated Canada 150 as well as the 100th anniversary of Finland, exploring perspectives on the North through music, architecture, digital installations and the culinary arts.

The tour includes over a dozen major concert performances and 150 education and outreach programs in communities across the country. The centrepiece of the tour will be Life Reflected, an immersive multi-media symphonic experience which brings together four remarkable Canadian composers for a celebration of youth, promise and courage, revealed in the compelling and diverse portraits of four women.

Dear Life by Alice Munro, is a reflection on memory, childhood and the formative stages of life, composed by Zosha Di Castri; My Name is Amanda Todd tells the story of a 15-year-old who tragically took her own life after speaking out against harassment and bullying on YouTube after years of suffering from cyber abuse, with music composed by Jocelyn Morlock; Roberta Bondar’s Bondarsphere tells of her remarkable expertise as an astronaut, physician, scientific researcher, and photographer, interpreted through soundtrack and video by Nicole Lizée; and in I Lost My Talk, Mi’kmaw elder and poet Rita Joe’s expresses her experience at Residential School, with music composed by John Estacio.

Commissioned by Alexander and premiered in Ottawa in May 2016, Life Reflected has since been taken to Toronto’s Luminato Festival where it was described as ‘’one of the most interesting Canadian symphonic endeavours of the past four years’’ (Globe and Mail), and will see its premiere in the cities of Calgary and Vancouver.

The NAC Orchestra begins their second half of the Canada150 tour on 19 October in Winnipeg. More information here.
