2017/18 season announcements – Royal Opera House, Wiener Staatsoper & Scottish Opera



ROYAL OPERA HOUSE – announced 5 April 2017

The Royal Opera House’s 2017/18 season – which sees Oliver Mears start his tenure as Director of Opera – features a total of six new productions and five world premieres, including the highly-anticipated new opera from George Benjamin and Martin Crimp, Lessons in Love and Violence, and a concert performance of Donizetti’s L’Ange de Nisida with Ludovic Tézier as King Fernand of Naples.

New productions include: Richard Jones’ new La bohème with Benjamin Bernheim and Andrei Bondarenko in their house debuts, Nicole Car, Rodion Pogossov, Duncan Rock & Ekaterina Siurina; David Alden’s new Semiramide with Joyce DiDonato in the title role; John Fulljames’ new The Return of Ulysses with Christine Rice; and Barrie Kosky’s new Carmen with Andrea Carè, Jean-Paul Fouchécourt & David Soar.

Six productions will feature in the house’s Live in Cinema series, including: their new production of La bohème (3 Oct 2017); Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (20 Sep 2017, with Rebecca Evans & Christina Gansch in her house debut); Verdi’s Rigoletto (16 Jan 2018, with Lucy Crowe & James Rutherford); and their new production of Carmen (6 Mar 2018).

WIENER STAATSOPER – announced 5 April 2017

The 2017/18 season at Wiener Staatsoper also features several new productions, including: Prokofiev’s The Gambler (with Linda Watson); Handel’s Ariodante with Sarah Connolly making her house debut in the title role and Pavel Kolgatin as Odoardo; Saint-Saëns’ Samson et Dalila, with Elīna Garanča and Roberto Alagna in the title roles. The season also includes the premiere of Alma Deutscher’s opera Cinderella.

The house will present 45 other productions across the season, including: Strauss’ Arabella with Christopher Maltman; Zeffirelli’s La bohème with Aida Garifullina and Anita Hartig; Eugene Onegin conducted by Louis Langrée; Le nozze di Figaro with two casts including Adam Plachetka, Dorothea Röschmann, Simon Keenlyside and Jongmin Park; Pelléas et Mélisande conducted by Daniel Harding with Christiane Karg, Peter Rose and Simon Keenlyside; and Salome conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin and with Lise Lindstrom in the title role.

SCOTTISH OPERA – announced 5 April 2017

Scottish Opera’s 2017/18 season features four new productions, including: Ariadne auf Naxos with Sir Thomas Allen as the Music Master; and Eugene Onegin with Samuel Dale Johnson making his role debut in the title role, Graeme Broadbent as Prince Gremin and James Platt as Zaretsky in his house debut. The season also sees the Scottish premiere of Jonathan Dove’s Flight, with Graeme Broadbent in the role of Immigration Officer, and a revival of Sir David McVicar’s La Traviata starring James Platt as Doctor Grenvil.

The company’s “Sunday Series: Opera in Concert” features performances of Iolanta (with Alexey Dolgov & James Platt), and Aleko & Francesca da Rimini (with Gevorg Hakobyan).
