The 2017 BBC Proms season begins!

The 2017 BBC Proms season gets underway this week with a thrilling line-up of Askonas Holt artist performances. Edward Gardner opens festivities tonight, conducting the world premiere of Tom Coult’s St John’s Dance; the first of three works premiered by AH artists at this year’s Proms. Alisa Weilerstein will play the UK premiere of Dusapin’s Outscape – written especially for her on the 19 July, and Thomas Adès will take to the podium to conduct the UK premiere of Coll’s Mural as well as his own Polaris on the 5 August.

Edward talks to the BBC Proms team ahead of his performance.

Other highlights include Beethoven’s Fidelio on the 21 July, featuring Cardiff Singer of the World Audience Prize winner Louise Alder in the role of Marzelline, also starring Brindley Sherratt as Rocco, David Soar as Don Fernando and Benjamin Hulett as Jacquino. The Il pomo d’oro orchestra will grace the Royal Albert Hall stage for the first time on the 7 August, followed by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s debut on the 27 August, conducted by Louis Langrée. The Ensemble Pygmalion will also make their first Proms appearance on the 31 July with a performance of Monteverdi’s Vespers.

Further Proms debuts will be taking place across the season, including newly signed Askonas Holt artist James Gaffigan who will conduct Sirens and Scheherazade with the BBC Symphony Orchestra on the 28 July. Christiane Karg debuts with a Chamber Prom at Cadogan Hall on the 21 August and pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk makes his debut performing Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra on the 13 August. Also making his Proms debut this year, Inon Barnatan will perform a programme of Ravel and Turnage featuring mezzo-soprano Mihoko Fujimuraand Karina Canellakis will make both her Proms and BBCSO debut on 5 September conducting Mazzoli, Bartók & Dvořák. We will be bringing you exclusive interviews with these artists ahead of their performances soon.
